Athletes need additional salt to compensate for the loss of sodium through sweat. During exercise, athletes sweat and lose not only fluids but also important electrolytes such as sodium, which is a component of salt. Adequate sodium levels in the body are essential for maintaining fluid balance, muscle contraction and nerve function.

When athletes exercise intensively for long periods of time or are active in hot and humid environments, sodium loss through sweat can be significant. Low sodium levels in the body can lead to dehydration, muscle cramps, fatigue, dizziness and reduced performance.

It may therefore be necessary for athletes to increase their sodium intake by adding extra salt to their diet. This can be in the form of salty snacks, salty drinks or special sports nutrition supplements such as Salt Tabs (ideally coated salt tablets). However, it is important to consider an athlete's individual needs and recommendations, as excessive salt intake can also have negative effects. A balanced diet and adequate hydration are also important to support athletes' performance and health.
